Occupational therapy is a health and rehabilitation profession that helps individuals achieve their optimal level of independence despite impairments or disabilities. Occupation refers to activities and tasks of everyday life which are purposeful and meaningful to an individual.
Occupational therapists work with people of all ages who, because of disease, injury, or disability, need specialized assistance to lead productive and satisfying lives. The occupational therapists at Total Rehab Center provide a variety of treatment techniques to enable patients to achieve their goals for independence. Common treatment techniques include upper extremity range of motion/strengthening/coordination exercises, specialized splinting, and edema reduction techniques.
All of the treatment approaches are centered around improving one’s independence with activities of daily living (ADL’s), such as dressing, bathing, home management tasks, and grooming/hygiene. Independence can be further achieved through specialized ADL techniques, such as instruction in one-handed dressing, and/or instruction regarding the use of adaptive equipment.
