Complex and Atypical
Monica Mays was a very active, hard working, mother of two. As with many other people this winter she slipped and fell on the ice causing some significant injuries. Monica suffered a fracture of her tibia, one of the weight bearing bones in the leg, that required extensive surgery to repair. As Monica will tell you her road to recovery began with a rough start. She was placed in an External Fixator to allow swelling to reside and healing to begin. Monica decided that a second opinion may be a good idea and was seen by another orthopedic surgeon who decided to perform an internal Fixator.
The road to recovery had began for Monica. She was sent to rehab for the late effects of the surgery, leaving her with a stiff knee and ankle. Monica was very motivated to begin therapy as soon possible. With hard work and strong will Monica has made a fantastic recovery. One of her favorite inspirational quotes is “I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.” Monica chose to be a hard worker and success story. She has returned to the gym on a regular basis and she is even lifting weights again as part of her therapy. Monica is a true testament to hard work and perseverance. We at Total Rehab Center congratulate Monica on her achievements during her recovery and wish her the very best as she returns to her normal life!

Leland Mattson has lifted weights on a regular basis since 2008. He was no stranger to the gym since he was a high school football player and wrestler.
